There are four things a company can do with the net profit it makes: 1) reinvest in the company 2) acquire other companies 3) buy back its own stock – or – 4) pay dividends. Companies that pay dividends are typically known for being more disciplined about their balance sheets. Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffet’s company, takes in billions in dividends every year, but doesn’t return them to investors. Instead, Berkshire reinvests dividends to create equal and even greater equity going forward.
