How Does Clinical Research Work?  

 

Clinical research typically follows a five-step process: design phase; recruitment phase; intervention/treatment phase; monitoring phase; and reporting phase. During the design phase, researchers create a study protocol that outlines the objectives and methods of the study as well as any risks associated with participating in it. In the recruitment phase they identify potential participants who meet certain criteria set out in the protocol and then obtain informed consent from each one prior to beginning data collection or any other activities related to the trial. During the intervention/treatment phase participants receive whatever treatment or device being studied while researchers monitor their health status and vital signs closely throughout this period. The monitoring phase involves collecting data from participants at regular intervals throughout their involvement in the trial in order to assess both short-term effects as well as longer-term outcomes such as whether there were any significant changes in health status over time compared with baseline measurements taken at the start of participation in the trial. Finally, during the reporting phase all data collected during each stage is analyzed for accuracy before being submitted for publication or presented at conferences.
